The Day the Earth Stood Still, miniature diorama

When we were at ImagiNation Expo 2001 we found the Skyhook booth and dropped as much cash there as we had. Caius picked out the mini diorama from The Day Earth Stood Still. When he saw daddy finishing Marcus’ C57-D kit he decided he’d have a go at his ship.

Caius never saw the film this diorama is based on and didn’t want to wait. He saw an action packed scene of spacemen versus humans and inspired by Warhammer 40,000, video games and a diet of too much TV, he attacked the model. He assembled the parts and added a couple of turrets made from scratch from pieces of plastic sprue.

He airbrushed the saucer brushed aluminum, found a good camouflage scheme for the tank and painted blood around the hapless dead soldier on the base. Unfortunately, Gort didn’t make it. Caius was a bit aggressive on trimming the tiny police robot and lopped off a fragile leg by accident.

The final diorama is a wonderful addition to the model display cabinet and Caius is proud of it, as he should be.

I built the other Skyhook model for Marcus. You can see it here.
