Tactical Squads

I started collecting and painting WH40K figs in the Rogue Trader days. Then, the best, if not only, way to collect marines was by buying a jiffy box of 30 plastic guys and assemble them. Not really knowing how my forces would work, but thinking that more guys seemed better than fewer guys, I bought three of these boxes and traded for more.

I ended up with 90 painted marines and sprues of many more. Thus I have 9 squads of 10, each with a missile launcher and flamer marine with a sergeant. Let me tell you, I can color the battlefield purple with these guys. Under the new rules however, I can’t imagine me needing 90 tactical marines.

Needless to say, when I painted these boys so many moons ago, I was perfecting my mass production system. I’d do 30 at a time. Nothing special to them; just paint, wash, dry brush and details. The missile launcher was a nice combination of black and a serious bone/yellow dry brushing . Then I picked out the rockets in the brightest orange I had. The flamers have flames painted on them, for that fast 50’s feel.

The insignia for the tactical Centurion squads is a spear behind the gold Centurion C.

Crusader Tactical Squad

The last thing I needed for WH40K was more Tactical Marines but I made these anyway. I’ve have these models forever and in a spurt of Marine pride finished them up. If nothing else they offer an alternative to the vast number of other Rogue Trader tactical marines. They also have a realistic choice of heavy and - best of all - special weapons with missile launcher, heavy bolter, plasma gun and melta gun.

Since I painted these guys, they haven't missed a Centurion engagement. Some have even survived!

Scouts

Scouts are supposedly marines in training. Their characteristics aren’t as good as regular marines, supposedly they’ll grow into it. Judging by the mortality of scouts, I wonder how any marine is ever trained.

My scouts were taken from a box set of something. They’re plastic. I have 10 more lying around somewhere. I experimented with camouflage, while keeping the purple. I never liked the figure but pained them to have in my army. I think I liked how they could hide.

I used the motif of the eye as a designation for scout. Seemed appropriate.

Scout Snipers

Rich, who has disappeared, nearly killed my Nightbringer with a bunch of these guys. This of course meant that I had to get some. I’m so predictable. They’re a good unit and I use them a lot.

It’s been a long time since I painted non-armored humans. Painting them reminded me of the way old days when I painted D&D figures draped in Elven Cloaks and leather armor. They were fun. I don’t think I could duplicate the scheme though. I didn’t write it down and I know I mixed most of the colors and used generous washes
