Necron Tomb Spyders

These huge and costly figures were painted the same way as the rest of my army. I suppose If I had had to buy them all separately (instead of in the big army box deal that GW offered when they first came out), I’d have felt obliged to do a little more with them than I did. Since they were just more Necrons to me, they were as simple as they Scarabs to paint. I thought of giving them a black shell so I could put on the stupid gold decals, but that would deviate too much from my uniform (shoulders are black, not shells). So the Spyders are big scarabs.

Their guns were the only challenge. Spyder don’t come with the cute little green plastic rods for their guns (I have no idea why) so I had to paint them. I used Flourescent green with Flourescent Yellow hightlighting. After a good coat of Future, the color is brighter than the green rods and doesn’t look out of place.

They may be boring, especially for a large piece, but they match my army quite well.

Necron Heavy Destroyers

Before I actually played Necrons, I thought that the Wraiths would be the definitive unit, but in my first battle 2 units dominated my victory; the Immortals and the Destroyers. A destroyer's combination of speed and firepower made it a threat every turn. Salivating over heavy weapons on these agile platforms, I ordered 3 Heavy Destroyers to compliment my army.

Construction was the same as the destroyers. The left arm is boring so I rearranged the pose as best I could. The cannon is pewter. Each had a slight bend and had to be straightened out and stretched open to hold the green rods. This was actually quite a pain.

I painted the Heavy Destroyers using the same scheme as the rest of my army, so there were no surprises there.

Basing was a problem since the balance wasn’t good. I had to break one stem and reset it. I used 2-part clear epoxy for the clear plastic rods and base; I’ve finally found a glue for clear plastic parts!

Necron Monolith

This is one of my all-time favorite models. I truly enjoyed building it. I tried several new things when making, including using color-shifiting paint and lighting it.

To see how I made it, check out the Monolith Construction page.

It’s a striking piece particularly when lit up and blinking, and quite an asset to my Necrons. I'm hoping to find time to make another one.
